Academic-Practice Partnership: Creating Dedicated Education Units to Promote Student Nurse Enrollment and Readiness for Nursing Practice
Brittany Burke, Heather OwensPurposeful partnerships between academic institutions and health care systems creates a unique approach to bridging the gap between nursing education and clinical practice. Through academic-practice partnerships, dedicated education units (DEUs) enhance hands-on learning experiences of student nurses while addressing the growing demand for a practice-ready nurse workforce. DEUs offer tailored educational environments aligning clinical placements with academic objectives, ensuring students are equipped with the necessary competencies to meet the challenges of modern health care. This manuscript reviews the development, implementation, and evaluation focusing on a DEU case study between a liberal arts academic institution and a regional health system.
Key components of DEU success include a robust academic-practice partnership, optimized nurse-to-student ratios, culture selection of units, effective nurse leaders, and adaption to evolving health care needs. The manuscript explores how these factors contribute to increased student nurse enrollment, improved readiness for nurse practice, and fostering long-term commitments to the health care system. It also highlights the development of micro-credentials, teaching appointments, and factors for DEU selection. Lessons learned from the partnership emphasize the importance of strong communication, flexibility, and continuous evaluation. Insights gained offer valuable guidance for institutions seeking to implement similar initiatives, ensuring future nurses are prepared to deliver safe, high-quality patient care.
