Arap Halk Hikâyeciliği Bağlamında Sisebân Vadisi Hikâyesi

Ahmet Gemi
Arabic literature emerges within world literature with its various branches. Arab folk literature, an important branch of Arabic literature, has long attracted attention due to its historical roots, elements, rich curriculum, and areas of dissemination. Folk literature is an integral part of the oral tradition, consisting of the unique narration or transmission of real or imaginary events or adventures in a distinct style. One of the significant branches of folk literature is gazavetnāme or cenknāme. Gazavetnāmes depict the heroism, raids, and battles of the Islamic army. Especially narratives portraying the valor of Hz. Ali and Hz. Hamza, in prose or poetry, have been well received among the people since ancient times. One such cenknāme is the Tale of the Sisebān Valley. This narrative revolves around a battle believed to have taken place in the Sisebān Valley within the borders of Yemen between the army commanded by the Prophet Muhammad and the army of the Yemeni King Gitrif. Such a battle is not documented in Islamic history. In this entirely fictional battle, Hz. Ali demonstrates extraordinary feats, leading the Islamic army to victory. This study briefly touches upon Arab folk literature, provides information about the rare folk literary product, the Tale of the Sisebān Valley, and presents a Turkish translation of this tale in the appendix.
