Cleft lip and palate is the most common congenital anomaly affecting 1.6 per 1000 live births. Cleft lip and palate may involves the lip, alveolus, hard palate and soft palate in different combinations. As cleft lip and palate involves diverse combinations and requires an interdisciplinary approach towards treatment, a common language of communication is required. The classication of cleft lip and palate has come a long way since the rst classication system by Davis and Ritchie in 1922 till now.
