Media Literacy and the Internet Usage about Baby Care: Generation Y Mothers

Objective: Media literacy is an important generation Y women’s health issue. This study was conducted to determine media literacy and Internet usage about health and the baby care issues. Methods: This study was conducted the determining the media literacy and usage of social media about the health issues of the 175 generation Y mothers (born between1981-1995). The data were collected by Media Literacy Level Determination Scale. Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis tests were used for data analysis. Results: The mean age of the mothers was 30. Mothers were used Social media sites (30.3%) on the Internet, the most. More than half of the mothers prefer the sites of health institutions (33.8%) and scientific websites (32.5%) for getting information. Mothers frequently investigate issues related to disease (12.6%) and infant-child nutrition (10.9%). The mean score of the scale was 65.7 ± 11.6. The relationship between media literacy and education level and internet usage year were significant (p> 0.05). Conclusion: The media literacy level of the mothers was medium. The media literacy levels are higher among mothers who graduate from university and have used the Internet for more than five years. Nurses should take into account the generation Y mothers could easily access information via social media. Nurses should use technology in service delivery and counselling.
